Along Vermont’s scenic Route 100, a local in a red flannel shirt and grease-stained jeans starts his day by kicking the last of his driveway snowbank to pieces, hoping it will melt in the bright sun. It’s only early spring, but some people are just over winter. I am not one of them.
Especially since learning that Mount Snow has invested more than $8.5 million in state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment over the past two years. It’s time to check back in: It’s been three decades since I last visited the mountain so popular with metro New Yorkers.

Whistler’s newest remodel—formerly the Coast Whistler—unveils in time for the Games, with a village location that’s five minutes by foot from the gondola. Décor is best described as mountain-modern (lots of creams and whites, clean lines and a 20-foot-tall cylindrical lobby fireplace), and the 185-room hotel has a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, flatscreen HDTVs, fitness room and free wireless internet. The onsite restaurant, casual chain White Spot, specializes in burgers and comfort food, but there are plenty of more refined options throughout the village.

Although it’s hardly off the beaten path, Tahoe City remains oddly inconspicuous. Highway 28/89—which circles Lake Tahoe—cuts right through the center of town, and TC is ideally positioned near three of the North Shore’s greatest ski areas: Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Homewood. Yet it’s a faint blip on most Sierra skiers’ radars. Most folks zip by obliviously on their beeline from Reno or South Lake to slopeside lodging. Chic resort amenities and casino-strip nightlife aren’t on offer in this shorefront village, but that’s precisely the point.
